Beyond Borders: Migration Through the Lens of Bekezela Mabena

Updated: Feb 14

Migration, when it comes to humans, is a deeply complex journey filled with a mix of emotions – hope, fear, disappointment, and the transformation that comes with navigating new realities. Artist Bekezela Mabena invites us to experience this journey firsthand through his collection, 'Patterns of Migration'. We believe that his art transcends borders and acts as a powerful lens for all to critically observe the social realities of migration as well as its impact on individuals who embark on these journeys.

Mabena’s art explores the very essence of the migrant experience. His art gives voice to the experiences of people who have left their homes, venturing into the unknown in search of a better life, and yet his pieces are deeper than the depiction of moving across borders. It prompts us to reflect on not just migration but also, the strength of the human spirit, and how we're all connected as humans.

The symbolism in his art compels us, the viewers to think about the real people and their experiences behind the act of migration. Drawing inspiration from the Limpopo River, Mabena incorporates water-inspired patterns and textures into his work to visually represent the way migrants adapt as they cross borders. Water is a universal solvent and it could represent the adaptability that is expected of migrants. It speaks to their ability to move past cultural and geographical restrictions and forge new paths. In his paintings, he focuses on the flow of migration, highlighting the Limpopo river as a silent witness to human strength and adaptability.
