Queen Idia was a force to be reckoned with; a powerful force that shaped the empire's trajectory in the 16th century. Her role extended far beyond traditional expectations. Much like the Greek goddess Athena, celebrated for her wisdom and strategic prowess, Idia demonstrated remarkable political flair. She served as a key advisor to her son, Oba Esigie, influencing crucial decisions that contributed to the empire's growth. She also held a title, 'Iyoba' (Queen Mother), which was specifically created for her, signifying her unique position within the Benin court.

There are accounts indicating that Idia, given her significant political influence, likely interacted with Portuguese traders and diplomats. This detail underscores the international scope of her story and situates her within a broader historical context.
