In a month dedicated to honoring women of every background, it would be a profound oversight to overlook Queen Idia, our own West African warrior queen. Her story of strength, wisdom, and influence deserves to be celebrated alongside the world's most remarkable women.

Who was Queen Idia?
Queen Idia was a force to be reckoned with; a powerful force that shaped the empire's trajectory in the 16th century. Her role extended far beyond traditional expectations. Much like the Greek goddess Athena, celebrated for her wisdom and strategic prowess, Idia demonstrated remarkable political flair. She served as a key advisor to her son, Oba Esigie, influencing crucial decisions that contributed to the empire's growth. She also held a title, 'Iyoba' (Queen Mother), which was specifically created for her, signifying her unique position within the Benin court.
There are accounts indicating that Idia, given her significant political influence, likely interacted with Portuguese traders and diplomats. This detail underscores the international scope of her story and situates her within a broader historical context.

Idia's Artful Legacy: Decoding the Masks' Craft
Her image, immortalised in the exquisite ivory masks, stands as a symbol of her enduring influence. These masks, masterfully crafted, highlight her royal status and spiritual significance, they serve as a testament to her ever-enduring influence. They were not only physically beautiful; they are potent symbols of power and spiritual connection.

Look closely at the coral beads, her peaceful face, and the headdress. They're all symbols, pointing to her royal position and her connection to the spirit world.
Beyond her political role, Idia was a patron of the arts, fostering a flourishing of creativity within the kingdom. Talented artisans created sculptures, metalwork and ivory carvings that eventually became proof of the Benin people’s talent and prosperity.
We don't know everything about Idia, but her impact is obvious. She was a woman of remarkable strength and vision, and her legacy still resonates. Her story is a powerful reminder of the lasting influence women have wielded throughout history.
